PHASE III - PLANKING THE HULL - 2001

The extensive structural repairs were completed. The garboard and the first planks were hung. African Mahogany boards dressed to an inch and a half were used. The planks were edge glued with West System epoxy and coated on the inside as well.

The stem receives the first rows of planks. Over 14,000 silicaon bronze screws with mahogany bungs were used to fasten the mahogany to the ribs.

In this view, the solid blocking to receive the stabilizers is being installed.

The bronze shaft struts are installed over the planking.

Detail showing scarf joints in planking. No butt blocks were used. Instead, long scarf joints that were glued and screwed joined the planks in length. At the top of this photo can be seen the old long leaf pine planks and the caulk joint that remains above the waterline.

The hull planking is completed. Before receiving bottom paint, the hull will receive a coating of low viscosity epoxy resin, to protect the wood from worm intrusion.

On the left, the stern shelf framing is renewed. On the right, the new shelf trim is in place.

The side decks have been layered first with heavy fiberglass mat and here the final layer of Dynel will give the appearance, when painted, of the original canvas decks. The cloth has been brought up vertically inside the rib ends, which will be covered with the gunwale inside covering board.
